I'm going to hell

Is it bad that I'm amused by the latest dust up over Gilmore Girls spoilers? All that anger. All the indignation. All the "I'm never watching again!" It's like the great JAG kerfuffle of 2004. I should have more sympathy, but I just find the whole thing so funny because I've been here so many times before. How long do you think until it winds up on fandomwank? I would die if it turned out like JAG, where so many people walked away from the show because of a storyline that played out 100% different than spoilers led us to believe.

For the record, my opion is behind the cut.

I don't think Luke having a daughter he never knew about is destroying his character. Some have said it does because Luke is not the type to have a one-night stand. Says who? I also have never bought into the "Luke is infallible" myth, so maybe that colors my judgement. And who said it was a one-night stand? How a girl getting pregnant and not telling him is his fault, I have no idea. If anything, he's the victim here.

Is it a little soapy? Sure. But so was Rory sleeping with a married Dean. And the whole R/D/J triangle. We also have to remember that the DNA test is performed by a 10-year-old girl. A brilliant 10 year old, but still. I do think she'll end up being really his, but my point is that there a lot of ways this storyline could go and I think the odds of it ruining the show are slim. I am worried about the potential effects on Luke and Lorelai's relationship, but I'm willing to see how it plays out. I really do think that if done well, it could be very interesting.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, of course, and I do feel bad that so many people are upset.

I might be the only one, but I'll still be watching.

Wow, I feel like I must be the last person to know this spoiler...

Wow.

I don't think Luke having a daughter he never knew about is destroying his character. Some have said it does because Luke is not the type to have a one-night stand. Says who? I also have never bought into the "Luke is infallible" myth, so maybe that colors my judgement.

Yes, yes, a million times yes..."Hey, character layers, what up?"

Very interesting...

[identity profile] em-meredith.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, character layers, what up?"

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I <3 you guys.

"Hey, character layers, what up?"

*snort*

[identity profile] ciachick711.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that I mind him being "non-perfect" so to speak, I just wish they had thought of a different way to do it. Eh, my attitude today is sort of "whatevs" so that means I'll be around.

[identity profile] thestickywicket.livejournal.com 2005-10-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, a million times yes..."Hey, character layers, what up?"

LOFL! I totally heart you.

And not only character layers, it's possible he was with someone for a while, and it ended badly, and she never told him she was pregnant. This could've happened a million different ways.

I also love the irony of being all, "Lorelai Gilmore with the baby at 16 is teh awesome -- OMG LUKE HAD SEX!?!? DIRTY!" WTF?

[identity profile] austin360.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, how did I not know this?

I'll still watch. I'm not getting worked up into a lather over the fact that Luke has a daughter. I'm kind of interested.

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It just came out late last night. You can find the actual side (and a summary) here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/genevieve719/220938.html#cutid1

And I knew we were soulmates for a reason. I really do think this could be an interesting twist.

[identity profile] austin360.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
We are soulmates, baby!

I was more pissed when I found out that my #1 Boyfriend was going to die a ridiculous death. This? I can live with it.

It's interesting that it's done in true Gilmore fashion. I mean, a kid pulling three hairs and running off? Luke finding out he's a father by looking at a science experiment in a gym? Very Palladino.

[identity profile] kelbelle.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I just went and read the spoilers. As long as she's not Crazy Carrie's daughter...who cares! It would be NICE to have part of the relationship actually, you know, be ABOUT Luke...not just Lorelai.

*is down with it*

(And clearly not working)

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more. And she's NOT Crazy Carrie's.

(And clearly not working)

Me either, and I need to. I'm only 7 minutes into a certain project for a certain show, and I have 37 more to go and a 3-day meeting that starts in 3 hours. Oy.

[identity profile] kelbelle.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww. 3-Day meeting? Ick.

I got spoiled by Seattle over the weekend and now I'm stuck in Sitcomville. So not where I'd like to spend my day.

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
All the people who do my job (and related ones) across the country meeting at the national HQ. And I guess technically 2 and 1/2 days, but still, there are evening activities. I love my job, but I hate these things.

I'm actually in a city with the WB, and will miss GG tonight because it's on at 7 here and I will be "socializing" at a reception. Ugh.

Sorry about sitcomville. I'm to the part of Days of our Hospital where they lay out all the medical crap. I know you of all people feel my pain.

*still not working*

[identity profile] kelbelle.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, do I ever.

Dude, I would so be skipping the socializing part of the evening. That's just wrong.

[identity profile] scatteroflight.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still going to watch, too. For a while.

I've calmed down a lot from my initial "WTF?!" reaction last night to something more of a resignation to this storyline. I still don't like it, for a myriad of reasons. I think it's cheap, mostly. It feels like a blatant manipulation to draw out the "Will they or won't they?" aspect of L/L's relationship. But I'll watch. Because at least it's more interesting than seeing Rory freak out about seating plans and salmon puffs.

[identity profile] jenah.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what the spoilers are - since I just ran past what you wrote as fast as I could. But I just wanted to say - hey I'm still watching. LOL Although I guess that doesn't mean much since I have no idea as to what everyone is so upset about. HEEEEE! [and don't tell me!]

[identity profile] courtney42.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I like your thoughts on the spoiler. My only beef with the thing is that it feels like bad!fic. Heh.

Meanwhile, I'm watching S2 DVDs just so I'll calm down. ;)

(psst, OT - I downloaded the GA torrent and have watched the Cristina/Burke scene a dozen times. <3)

[identity profile] puffingnoise.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree with you.
Now, you probably know that I'm (usually) spoiler-free, but when I heard all the ruckus about this supposed spoiler, I couldn't help myself and I had to look it up. I wasn't nearly as bad as I had been imagining, and I don't really know what everyone's getting so upset about. It does sound maybe a little contrived and out of left field, so I sort of hope it's not true, but even if this is a real spoier, I trust the writers to write this in a way that doesn't seem like a bad fanfic, or like the show is turning into a soap opera. And just like you said-- just because Luke has daughter that he never knew about, doesn't mean he had a one night stand with someone (which I agree with others who say a one night stand is so not Luke, and I'll be a bit disappointed in him if that's the case), it was probably someone who he was in a relationship with, and they broke it off, and she later found out she was pregnant and never told him! That's not Luke's fault. I'm kind really interested to see how this turns out if the spoiler is real. And I'm upset that so many fans are willing to give up on the show before even watching to se how it turns out.

Oh, and I love that you used the word "kerfuffle"! I love that word. I was obsessed with it last weekend. :oP

[identity profile] ciachick711.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If the girl is around 10 or 11, that probably means that he met/knew her mother around the time that Rachel left? Is my math right? (Its hard to know in Gilmore land.) I doubt they'll even think of that or have it play into it at all, but that would be interesting.

Poor Luke, he's going to be kicking himself if this is really his kid. Yeah, so, I'm a little excited now. Thanks guys.

[identity profile] puffingnoise.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)

I was wondering if it would turn out to be Rachel's daughter. But that might be weird that she had showed up again in season 1 and never mentioned she had a 5-year-old daughter that was Luke's (unless they say that she showed up for that reason, and then chickened out and never told him). But I don't know if they'll go down that path. But hey they might because I think the writers don't realize how obsessively their fans watch this show, and will probaby be like, "Eh, they probably forgot about Rachel by now." and throw that in there.
Unless you're saying that Luke had a one night stand after Rachel left the first time (I hope not!), or had another relationship that they've never mentioned before. That would be interesting. The more I think about this, the more interested I get.

[identity profile] ciachick711.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I meant. That he met this woman and she was sort of his rebound for Rachel. Not in a bad way, just, it happens. I'm probably just projecting this because out of all the exes on the show, I liked Rachel the best. I doubt they'll really bring it up.

[identity profile] priwskywalker.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought too, Anna is rebound girl. I don't think it was a one-night stand, but if it was, I don't think I will think less of Luke. He doesn't strike me as the type, but it could have happened once. We have to face the fact that we don't know everything about Luke's past.

I blame all the freakout on fanfic. People have this vision of Luke that was established with fanfic and, if we go to the show to find scenes that support all of Luke's backstory in that realm, there's almost nothing. Where does it say that Rachel was Luke's girlfriend since High School? Or that he never went to college? He didn't go away to college, but he could have studied in Hartford. There's lots of things we don't know, and Amy can't tell her story if she worries about what people chose to believe as the truth.

[identity profile] priwskywalker.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm upset that so many fans are willing to give up on the show before even watching to se how it turns out.

This is what upsets me the most in all this. But I figure some of the fans have been giving up little by little since last season, this was just the last drop. Still, it bugs me.

[identity profile] ciachick711.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So who wants to beta a spoiler fic if I write one? *g*

[identity profile] chickflick1979.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I do!

And you guys aren't the only ones who think this story could potentially be interesting, if done well. Of course, I don't always trust the P's to do it well... but remember that we're reading one scene from one episode and we don't know any of the context. I'm not judging till I see it.

I don't think Luke having a daughter he never knew about is destroying his character. Some have said it does because Luke is not the type to have a one-night stand. Says who? I also have never bought into the "Luke is infallible" myth, so maybe that colors my judgement. And who said it was a one-night stand?

I agree. We need to see more of Luke's flaws, transgressions, etc.

And I'm also more concerned about what it will do to his relationship with Lorelai... which is probably the whole point of this contrivance, anyway.

[identity profile] puffingnoise.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm also more concerned about what it will do to his relationship with Lorelai... which is probably the whole point of this contrivance, anyway

That's the first thing I thought of. I'm really interested in how Lorelai is going to take it, and how it will impact their relationship. I mean, I'm pretty confident that Luke and Lorelai are totally settled and there's really no chance of them breaking up (if anyone knows otherwise, don't tell me!), so I'm really curious about how Lorelai will react, if Luke will be worried that Lorelai will freak out and run, etc, etc, etc... Fun!

[identity profile] priwskywalker.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what I really worry? Really really worry? That we won't see the scene where Luke tells Lorelai.

According to the side, the episode has 26 scenes, and the scene where Luke finds out is the 25th. If the 26th isn't him telling Lorelai, can't you just see 6.10 beginning with them in her house or the diner or whatever figuring out what to do?

Scary thoughts.

[identity profile] zandras-court.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And who said it was a one-night stand? How a girl getting pregnant and not telling him is his fault, I have no idea.

And this is completely plausible. My BiL had this happen. He wasn't told about a pregnancy through an old girlfriend until the boy was 2. He now has custody because mom became a drug addict. So it happens.

One of the interesting things to me about the Luke/Lorelai dyanmic was that he didn't have kids, yet he often acted like he knew how to raise them. Lorelai hasn't been perfect, but she's got the experience of how hard it really is. Something I haven't thought Luke appreciated enough.

[identity profile] mistopher.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
omg EXACTLY first off the girl is like 10 or 11 etheir way she was born a YEAR before Luke even met Lorelai.

Second it's not like Luke has lied to Lore or anyone HE DIDNT KNOW. Luke and Lore are both gonna be floored by this and i really think that they will work through this SIDE BY SIDEno it won't be easy but thats the point really. and I for one am REALLY REALLY excited!

i mean up till now we know Luke as the diner man who has always loved Lorelai. Rachel was gone before we even got to know her and we hardly saw Nicole. Liz is our only link to anything Luke. For once we are FINALY getting history on Luke which i for one have always wanted. This is the first time Lore has to be there for him! he has put up with her parents, Christopher and lately everything with Rory now it's her turn. It's going to be really really good!!

i'm proud of ASP for having the guts to write it!!I say
BRING IT ON!!

[identity profile] mistopher.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
ok so double posting but i found this in the 1-13 transcripts
MISS PATTY: Oh this must have been what, five, six years ago? Did she break that man’s heart. It was terrible.

LORELAI: How did I not know about this?

SOOKIE: Honey, you had an 11 year old kid and you were just moving into this house. Plus Rachel traveled all the time. She was a photographer.

So that would be 10 years ago cause Rory is 21 now. So it would be right around the time of Rachel now my only question is this. if the girl is ten then you have to add 9 months so if you follow that time line (which who knows if ASP even is) then he would almost HAVE to have cheated on Rachel??? unless the girl is 11 then add nine months it could have been right before Rachel. Maybe the relationship with this girls mom ended badly and he hooked up with Rachel right after and since he seemed happy that's why this girl never told him about the baby?

[identity profile] lotusqueen.livejournal.com 2005-10-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Any storyline that doesn't involve T.J. and that takes the focus off of Rory's increasingly annoying quarter existential crisis for a while is ok by me.

[identity profile] witchofthedogs.livejournal.com 2005-10-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm upset that so many fans are willing to give up on the show before even watching to se how it turns out.

I love you, JeS, but I have to disagree about some of this... Many of us who are leaving the show are disappointed in where the show has gone over the last several episodes. I'm not upset over Luke "betraying" Lorelai (which he didn't, true), or the possibility of Scott leaving the show (have no idea how that got linked to this spoiler)... Rather, I'm upset at the tired and cliched way that they are developing this story... It's too soap-opera like for my favorite show... Too much like Dynasty and not like Gilmore Girls.

I hope you all keep hope and I do hope that the story is done well... I just feel like Amy and Daniel have shoved the metaphorical middle finger at me one too many times.

Witchy

And I'm upset that so many fans are willing to give up on the show before even watching to se how it turns out.

You do know that I didn't say this right? Puffingnoise did. I honestly could care less if people stop watching - you have every right. I've given up several shows (most recently Alias) because I stopped enjoying them.

I actually said that I'm amused by the whole thing, having watched something very similar in JAG last season. A huge segment of the on-line fandom left in outrage over a spoiler (after the quality had declined, as well) only to have the storyline play out completely differently on air. Do I think that's going to happen here? Not really - I think what we're seeing is probably what we're going to get. I just learned my lesson not to pre-judge something before it airs. And there's a whole lot that we don't know yet. Then again, I actually think the spoilers have potential to be interesting, something many people disagree on. You think it's soapy and cliched? You're entitled to that opinion. Just as I'm entitled to my opinion that it could open up some opportunities for interesting stories and character development.

Many of us who are leaving the show are disappointed in where the show has gone over the last several episodes.

Again, as is your right. Personally, I'm enjoying the season, and I know I'm in the minority.
