A fannish confession

I know my whole flist is aflutter over the new Veronica Mars (which I actually did watch, BTW), but I have a confession that can't wait any longer and it has nothing to do with VM.

I'm in love.

I know I'm fickle. I know I fall in love quickly and then get bored and move on. This is different, though. It's the real thing. I've resisted for years. Years. My friends, both in real life and on-line, have gushed and tried to get me to try this fandom. Nope, I said, not my thing. I had absolutely no interest. Finally, I dipped a toe in. I thought "I guess this is interesting, but it's never going to be an obsession." Boy, was I wrong.

If loving Harry Potter is wrong, I don't want to be right.

I watched the movies with hubby and J., and decided the books might be a good read. I read the first 2 and a half and wasn't blown away. Good, but nothing mind blowing. I was half-way through PoA when I went to visit my mom. In the 5 days I was there, I devoured PoA, GoF, and OotP. I couldn't put them down. I stayed up way too late, needing to see what happened next, what was just around the corner. I finished OotP 2 days before we left to come home, and there was no place to buy HBP (my parents live in a teeny tiny town that mostly closes down after Labor Day). I felt like a junkie in need of a fix. I ended up buying HBP in the Minneapolis airport, praying that J. would entertain himself so I could finish. That night, even though I'd been up since 4am and had to work as soon as I got home, I stayed up until midnight reading.

And then I went searching for fanfic. I've got it bad. I tore through After the End (which I now need to reread) and having been searching for recs. I adore Harry/Ginny, but Remus/Sirius might actually tie as my OTP and Ron/Hermoine definitely make me happy. And don't even get me started on the non-slashy Harry and Sirius godfather/godson relationship. Of course, I have no time to read, but I don't even care.

*sigh* I love finding new fandoms.

*giggles*

That's awesome.

So you cried while reading After the End, right?

So you cried while reading After the End, right?

Multiple times. To the point of embarrassing myself. The part where Harry cries in Ginny's arms? Huge, fat, snotty sobbing.

And look! Multiple icons!

[identity profile] kelbelle.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I sobbed like a lunatic during Chapeter 27 3/4. Like, a big snotty mess at my desk...and then tons of times after.

Multiple icons!

One: Welcome to the fold, darling. I began reading HP with TeenQueen back in the day. She couldn't have cared less, I fell in love. I devour each book as it comes and each movie. And though I have waited for the DVDs to come out for each, I don't plan to do that with GoF, which has been my favorite so far. WeeOne loves the movies and I cannot wait until she's old enough to read the books.

Two: I have not yet delved into HP fic except for a incredible HP/BtVS cross-over teaser fic that [livejournal.com profile] miggy wrote a while back. Might you give us a link for the fic you mentioned?

The on-line fandom scares me, but I'm all about fic and chatting with my LJ peeps. I don't think I'm going to be finding message boards or anything. Too many 12 year olds.

And it seems like a love a different character with every chapter. Fred and George kill me, and yesterday I was on a Tonks kick.

Oh my dear girl, welcome to the madness. I am a R/S shipper myself, so let me know when/if you want recs.

Speaking of Weasleys...

Are you aware there's a CJ/Bill Weasley fic that is, like, totally awesome?

WHEEEEEE!

Now we have a whole new fandom to squee about when we get together! :)

I'm totally seeing GoF when it comes out. I think I'll be in Michigan for Thanksgiving, but I don't care. If hubby doesn't want to go, I'll go by myself. *g*

And OMG, After the End is like the ULTIMATE fic EVER. I laughed when [livejournal.com profile] em_meredith told me that, but it's so true. It's longer than an actual book and just amazingly written. You can find the fic in an archive here: http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=619&chapno=1. However, I'd suggest joining the yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AftertheEnd/). In the files section, you can find the whole story PLUS outtakes. In fact, the PDF file has the outtakes in the file in the order they fall between chapters.

Recs? Yes, please!!! I've found some just by sheer luck, but if you ever have time, I'd love for you to point me in the right direction. BadFic scares me.

YEA for HP love! Though I am an elitist when it comes to my Harry fanishness. I only do the books. I read nothing outside of JK Rowling's canon and despise the movies with a burning passion. Though the last one was a vast improvement.

All the characters are wonderful, whether I like them or not. Yup, they're fantastic. Glad you've finally taken the plunge!

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! [/Monica] But I'm so glad I finally know what people are talkikng about.

BTW - I came home for lunch just in time to catch Pacey and Joey having sex for the first time. I <3 them.

*wipes away a tear* Beautiful.

[identity profile] em-meredith.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so proud. heehee! Look at the HP crack dealing!

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Have mercy - I haven't read it enough to know what happens exactly when. 27 3/4? What happens there?

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I learned from the master. *eg*

[identity profile] kelbelle.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? That's what I said, too.

*loves*

It's when Ernie and Eloise write the story about the quidditch match. And it ends with the quote from Hagrid...who is dead. And...and...I'm weepy just thinking about it.

I am the biggest sap.

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God. Yep, I remember. *sniff*

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I'm to a point where I'm getting icons or looking for fic, but I don't think it would take much to push me over the edge. And I might hate you just a little bit for that.

[identity profile] jesouhaite47.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not quite that elite, I guess. But I'm glad I finally know what everyone's talking about!

[identity profile] em-meredith.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I can give you some fic recs when I get back from Florida. You're welcome! heehee

[identity profile] pookha.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
SQUEEE!!! I'm so excited you dove headfirst into this fandom. In the pdf I sent you, the only outtake I really like is the Sirius/Lupin one. *sniff* Beautiful. :)

[identity profile] siryn99.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Two excellent places to start are [livejournal.com profile] potter_recs and [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom. I'll vouch for them, since I am a reccer at both places. At Crack Broom, you'll be able to find all pairings, Potter Recs is R/S and H/D heavy.

I have some of my personal favorites in these posts (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=siryn99&keyword=My+Fic+Recs+-+Multi+Fandom&filter=all). There's also a section of random stories under HP Recs that I just haven't had time to pimp yet.

Rynne has an enormous R/S list here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rynne/92804.html) and Victoria's is here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/musesfool/628616.html). What you'll find here is a good percentage of the cream of the crop.

Authors I'd give a blanket rec to - [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, [livejournal.com profile] blacksatinrose, [livejournal.com profile] starstillwonder, [livejournal.com profile] anniesj, [livejournal.com profile] juliefortune, [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl (who does a fab Hermione), and [livejournal.com profile] setissma.

For art/icons - [livejournal.com profile] raelala, [livejournal.com profile] ignited, [livejournal.com profile] linnpuzzle, [livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121, and [livejournal.com profile] celestialsoda, [livejournal.com profile] miints.

Whew! Well, that should be plenty to get you started.

I'm not really into the HP fic thing either, but I do love the books a LOT. PoA is absolutely my fav, although I have much love for HBP too. And the same goes for the third movie, I thought it was made the best out of the three, but I'm really excited for the fourth one too.
