A fannish confession

I know my whole flist is aflutter over the new Veronica Mars (which I actually did watch, BTW), but I have a confession that can't wait any longer and it has nothing to do with VM.

I'm in love.

I know I'm fickle. I know I fall in love quickly and then get bored and move on. This is different, though. It's the real thing. I've resisted for years. Years. My friends, both in real life and on-line, have gushed and tried to get me to try this fandom. Nope, I said, not my thing. I had absolutely no interest. Finally, I dipped a toe in. I thought "I guess this is interesting, but it's never going to be an obsession." Boy, was I wrong.

If loving Harry Potter is wrong, I don't want to be right.

I watched the movies with hubby and J., and decided the books might be a good read. I read the first 2 and a half and wasn't blown away. Good, but nothing mind blowing. I was half-way through PoA when I went to visit my mom. In the 5 days I was there, I devoured PoA, GoF, and OotP. I couldn't put them down. I stayed up way too late, needing to see what happened next, what was just around the corner. I finished OotP 2 days before we left to come home, and there was no place to buy HBP (my parents live in a teeny tiny town that mostly closes down after Labor Day). I felt like a junkie in need of a fix. I ended up buying HBP in the Minneapolis airport, praying that J. would entertain himself so I could finish. That night, even though I'd been up since 4am and had to work as soon as I got home, I stayed up until midnight reading.

And then I went searching for fanfic. I've got it bad. I tore through After the End (which I now need to reread) and having been searching for recs. I adore Harry/Ginny, but Remus/Sirius might actually tie as my OTP and Ron/Hermoine definitely make me happy. And don't even get me started on the non-slashy Harry and Sirius godfather/godson relationship. Of course, I have no time to read, but I don't even care.

*sigh* I love finding new fandoms.

*giggles*

That's awesome.

So you cried while reading After the End, right?

One: Welcome to the fold, darling. I began reading HP with TeenQueen back in the day. She couldn't have cared less, I fell in love. I devour each book as it comes and each movie. And though I have waited for the DVDs to come out for each, I don't plan to do that with GoF, which has been my favorite so far. WeeOne loves the movies and I cannot wait until she's old enough to read the books.

Two: I have not yet delved into HP fic except for a incredible HP/BtVS cross-over teaser fic that [livejournal.com profile] miggy wrote a while back. Might you give us a link for the fic you mentioned?

Oh my dear girl, welcome to the madness. I am a R/S shipper myself, so let me know when/if you want recs.

WHEEEEEE!

Now we have a whole new fandom to squee about when we get together! :)

YEA for HP love! Though I am an elitist when it comes to my Harry fanishness. I only do the books. I read nothing outside of JK Rowling's canon and despise the movies with a burning passion. Though the last one was a vast improvement.

All the characters are wonderful, whether I like them or not. Yup, they're fantastic. Glad you've finally taken the plunge!

SQUEEE!!! I'm so excited you dove headfirst into this fandom. In the pdf I sent you, the only outtake I really like is the Sirius/Lupin one. *sniff* Beautiful. :)

I'm not really into the HP fic thing either, but I do love the books a LOT. PoA is absolutely my fav, although I have much love for HBP too. And the same goes for the third movie, I thought it was made the best out of the three, but I'm really excited for the fourth one too.

YES! You're here and you're loving it and that just ROCKS. So glad you finished ATE. We must, must discuss.

::hugs:: Miss you!

Stay away from the online fandom. FAR. FAR. AWAY.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!! Love.it. Welcome to the fold. I'm not into the online HP fandom thing, but I'm obsessed with the books and movies and force everyone in my path to read them and watch them. *dances*

Oh, and I got my roommate hooked on Grey's Anatomy. I thought you might be proud.

This can't be emphasized enough. Don't go to the big online discussion groups. You will loose IQ points.

And don't even get me started on the non-slashy Harry and Sirius godfather/godson relationship.

That is definitely my favorite relationship in the HP universe. From watching the 3rd movie, it was that which convinced me to read the books. I can't say I'm really into any of the romantic ships in the books, though I have a theory about Snape being in love with Lily that I totally want to happen.

That's an awesome new-fandom story. Haha. :D

::bounces:: Don't worry, in actuality, 90% of the Potterfandom is wank-free. The problem is the other 10% is psychotically KING OF ALL WANKAGE! Seriously, the meltdown of the Harry/Hermione 'shippers post HBP was truly spectacular.

Now then it appears as if, no surprise, we're totally on the same 'shipwave. I didn't really get into fic and such until post POA movie, because the part at the end with Remus and Sirius. Whoah. So, at my request my favorite R/S author, [livejournal.com profile] musesfool rounded up fandom to compile the perfect R/S starter list: So PoA Finally Convinced You That SB/RL Is Canon! Here's The Fic You Must Read! (http://www.livejournal.com/users/musesfool/628616.html) (hehe, the title was my original request, actually.) I love that list 'cause it's organized by time/genre. Then sometime later I discovered another HUGE rec list (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rynne/92804.html) this one compiled by [livejournal.com profile] rynne. Oh and [livejournal.com profile] musesfool puts together a great monthly recommendation list at [livejournal.com profile] unfitforsociety which is multi-fandom with a heavy Potter focus. I've gotten many a good link from that community. Ah, and I have to pimp myself since I actually wrote a HPfic this month, my first! ;) Salavaged From the Fire (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fairy_tale_echo/26782.html).

It's a fun fandom to be in, honest, because there's tons of meta and tons of people involved, no matter who you 'ship or like...there's a community out there just for you! :) (my guilty 'shipping pleasure: Harry/Draco)

Well, Welcome to the Insanity! :D

As a Harry/Ginny reader, I have to suggest a few fics. I saw you read "After the End" which is such a fantastic fic. I remember reading it before OotP and now it makes me sad with Sirius....

http://www.phoenixsong.net/fanfiction/story/1129/ - A Muted Sort of Longing by Serenity : This is pre-HBP, but still fantastically written.

http://www.checkmated.com/bedchamber.php?story=3850 - Hearts and Heroes : Primarily R/Hr, but with H/G. This is an AU fic, but well written as well.

http://www.checkmated.com/story.php?story=5714 - Smart Girls: Post-HBP missing scenes. All really good and by the same author as Hearts and Heroes.

Whoo! From new fan to a new fan: ron/hermoine, Draco fanfic recommendations (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tiredangel18/126145.html?#cutid1) by [livejournal.com profile] tiredangel18. It's the starting point of a really huge obsession. Welcome to the madness!

Aaah, I'm so thrilled! I don't know which delights me more - that you read the books or that you read After the End? I suppose both, since you had to read the books to get to AtE. I need to schedule a re-read of that fic. It's probably one of my favorites in any fandom EVER. I don't remember the chapter, but the part where Hermione dreams of the Great Hall being destroyed and the students being told to go left or right and "Neville turns left", I lose it every. damn. time.

HP is just such a fantastic world to explore. Goblet of Fire remains my favorite book of the series, but they're all so excellent. I'm glad you've "seen the light", so to speak. Oh, and your 'ship preferences? Fantastic.
ext_10358: ((hp) i mean. look at them!)

[identity profile] jujubinha.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew it. Of course you would love it, because I love it, and we share a brain and all that jazz. ;) Hee!

[identity profile] memento1.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yaaaaaaaay!

Oh, I know what you're talking about. I resisted it for years, too, thinking it was such a kids thing.

I'm in the middle of HBP now and it's that same feeling - the same one I got from the previous ones and forgot about - of "I cannot put this down right now. I MUST know what happens next."

It makes me giddy ;) So I'm going to go home and read it now. hee!
